This study presented technical information to incorporate sustainable design principles into historic buildings owned by the Department of Defense (DoD). The study followed the LEED-EB Reference Guide for Existing Buildings, v. 2.0, June 2005, and provided specific discussion and strategies relevant both to historic preservation and to the DoD Criteria for LEED-NC (New Construction). The intent was to provide technical, feasible ways that the DoD can utilize LEED-EB criteria on historic buildings. The strategies and references included in this study were compiled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory–Engineering Research and Development Center and the architectural and engineering team of Hardlines Design Company and Karpinsky Engineering.
